Hassan Mohamud ’02

Mr. Mohamud received his Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law in 2002 and is the first Somali law school graduate from any law school in Minnesota. He is chair and director of the Minnesota Dawah Institute of Minnesota in St. Paul and is active in numerous community organizations, including the board of the Twin Cities Red Cross. He works an an Immigration Law Project Advocate at the Legal Aid Society of Minneapolis and is an adjunct professor at the Islamic University of Minnesota in addition to William Mitchell.

He received his LL.B. in civil and Islamic law in 1986 from the Somali National University School of Law and an MA in Islamic Law from the Higher Institute for Islamic Studies in Cairo, Egypt, in 1989.

An expert in Islamic law, Mr. Mohamud has written severalcomparative papers, including "Understanding Islam and Working with Muslim Clients," "Islamic Faith and the 1st Amendment in the American Constitution," "Interest Fee in Islam, Christianity and Judaism," "Judicial Oath Procedure in Islamic Law and Civil Law Comparing to Somali Culture," "Islamic and Somali Culture in American Public Schools," "Ideal Muslum Family" and others, including comprehensive studies on the US Patriot Act.

Mr. Mohamud speaks English, Arabic, Somali, and Italian and has lectured on Islamic law at both Hamline University and William Mitchell College of Law.
